Will Talcum Powder Increase My Risk of Ovarian Cancer?

Talcum powder is a commonly used feminine hygiene product that absorbs moisture and reduces friction between the thighs. Recent research has shown that powdered products can increase the risk of ovarian cancer.

You can know more about the link between talcum powder and developed ovarian cancer.

The increased risk was small and most of these studies were biased. However, due to the potential risks, obstetricians do not recommend using loose powder products.

Baby powder or talcum powder is made from a clay mineral called talc, which can also be mixed with corn starch. In their raw form, some talc may contain asbestos, a carcinogen known to cause cancer. While talc is being tested by the Food and Drug Administration, traces of asbestos have been reported.

For many women in the Baby Boomer generation, it is common practice to apply baby powder to underwear. This is done away so that it stays dry and gets rid of bad odors. It is believed that dust particles sprayed on the genital area can travel through the uterus to the ovaries and cause ovarian cancer.

This theory contradicts itself, but recent research has shown that women who use talcum powder are more likely to develop ovarian cancer. These results are not supported in other studies.

The relationship between talc and ovarian cancer is controversial and requires further investigation. There is currently no medical agreement that talcum powder causes ovarian cancer. However, because of the potential risk, obstetricians do not recommend using products containing talcum powder.
